Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

There may be nonconformities between the breast tissue and the surrounding skin due to weight changes, breastfeeding, and the influence of gravity. The bonds keeping the breast tissue in its place may get loose in the course of time. The root of the problem may be the breast tissue, skin or both of these. As a result, sagging breasts that almost look hollow may appear.

Surgery

In breast lift surgery, the sagging breast tissue is reshaped and the excess skin part is removed. The nipple is placed to where needs to be. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and hospital conditions in an operating room. It takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Scars that remain are in shapes varying depending on the degree of the sagging. No matter which method is applied, a scar formation around the nipple is inevitable. If a breast lift procedure is carried out by making an incision around the nipple, the scar around the nipple may become more noticeable. In other breast lift surgeries; there may be a scar of 4-5 cm that extends downward from the middle of the lower edge of the nipple, in addition to the scar around the nipple. In eligible patients, the sagging can be eliminated by only placing a breast implant. In such a case, the surgical scar is concealed at the junction line of the brownish skin of the nipple and the white skin of the breast, and it becomes minimal. There is no breast lift surgery that does not leave a scar. However, such scars are initially obvious but then become hardly visible in the course of time.

After Surgery

The postoperative period of breast lift surgery usually passes comfortably. The pain usually does not constitute a problem. If breast implants have been used during the surgery, limitation of arm movement may be experienced for a few days. Bra-like bandage is applied to the breasts. The sutures are removed 7 to 10 days after surgery. Athlete bra without strap is worn for a period of 6 weeks, and also massage is recommended. Swelling, nipple numbness and purplish discoloration on the skin may occur in the early postoperative period. They spontaneously disappear after a short time.

The patient can return to work within 3 to 4 days after breast lift surgery. It is recommended to abstain from heavy sports for a period of 3 months. Breast lift is a surgical procedure that generally gives good and lasting results, recovers the mental health of the patient and her spouse, and mas them more devoted to life. New reshaped breasts maintain their form for a long time; however, weight changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding and gravity may lead to new cases of sagging.
